The Morning Post: Undead Nightmare

Hello fellow ghost enthusiasts! I'm going to be making a somewhat unrelated blog post in the mornings from now on, in order to help me keep my sanity from all these supernatural studies. This morning, I'll be giving a personal review of the add-on "Undead Nightmare" for the popular next generation video game, "Red Dead Redemption"

Following in the footsteps of Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare continues to give players a ton of different angles of interest.

Firstly, the stunning presentation of the visuals. Undead Nightmare plays at a very high resolution, and any player would be able to tell this right away. There is such a depth in the detail of the game itself. All the buildings, characters, and the environment in general really give the player an impending feeling that this is truly the end of the world, and the Wild Western technology may not be enough to end the zombie apocalypse this time around! The blood splatters are excellent, The guns look fantastic, and although once in a while a player may experience some choppy horse-riding or a couple bugs here and there, everything regarding movement looks almost seamless.

The gameplay: As expected, you're looking at the same exact gameplay as featured in Red Dead Redemption, however this time around, you're probably a little more worried about population control rather than hunting down bounties. The game follows a system in which every other town has a more difficult wave a zombies to eradicate in order to declare the town safe... for the time being. Every once in a while, the player would notice on his/her map, that a town is in danger again. They could choose to go back in order to save the town, or let it fall victim to itself. The idea of the game would be basic to anyone who's familiar with zombie films. Only this zombie game might be a little more familiar if you've also had a past with Western movies, because this game is basically The Good The Bad and The Ugly meets Dawn of the Dead.

Anyway, the controls for the game are smooth as fuck, to be honest. It feels great to be able to easily go into your inventory just with your other hand and switch to your shot gun while you're in the middle of blowing away a shit ton of zombies with an automatic, without even giving a pause to your endless rampaging. Running around feels comfortable as hell, and horse-riding is even better than it was in Red Dead Redemption (not to mention the addition of the Horses of the Apocolypse, which, in my opinion, are bomb as fuck).

The only problem I ever had, was how easy the game made itself with the auto-aim and dead eye. And of course, you can go into the settings and change the auto-aim, which I personally had off the entire game. To me, it completely removes any challenge to the game that it would've posed otherwise. When you have it on, as soon as you hold down the aim trigger, your crosshatch almost magnetically locks on to the nearest zombie, and then all you have to do is move the analog stick up a fraction of a centimeter to get a head shot. BULL shit. But again, you can turn it off, so that's definitely a good thing.

The Dead-Eye, however, the player almost relies on in most scenarios. Which I hate, because it puts the damn game into about 300x slow motion, making a perfect head shot near impossible to miss. When a zombie is running at you at full speed, don't worry, just hit you're Dead-Eye into play, and take your sweet ass time taking care of the thing. To combat this Dead-Eye, I put it to extremely minimal use, and found that without it, the game was a hell of a lot more fun to play, and definitely more challenging in the best ways possible. Overall, the gameplay for Undead Nightmare is brilliant and satisfying.

If the extremely compelling main story line isn't enough for you, I'm sure you'll find rejoice in the side-quests, which also offer humor, horror, and even a bit of tragedy. AND, if that still isn't enough for you, you could spend hours on completing your journal, which is a great addition to the game, as it was in Red Dead Redemption. If you're looking for a great way to blow off some steam and time, Undead Nightmare is a great outlet to do so.

I'd give it 9 popcorn shakes.

  7. I appreciate the review. I have really been into the COD Black Ops Nazi Zombies lately and have been looking for a game like this to throw into the mix for some variety. I really enjoy the modern guns in COD but I imagine its a lot more challenging when you don't have a squad automatic rifle to mow the waves down with. But anyway thanks again!
